Korean Vegetarian and Halal Food

I'm a foodie traveler. The best way to get the full flavor of any country is eating its food. I'm also an expat in Korea for 4 years now. I've eaten many delicious Korean dishes. As a Muslim woman I understand that some Muslims try to avoid eating Korean food because it is often cooked with pork. However, there are plenty of Halal Korean dishes that you must eat while visiting Korea. Don't just go and eat at Middle Eastern restaurants and miss out all of the delicious food.

Also, I have vegetarian expat friends who can't eat some dishes and sometimes they don't know what to eat. So I'm writing this list of my favorite Korean foods for them.

Here's some Korean dishes that Muslims and vegetarians can both enjoy!

1- Ddukkbokki: It's my personal favorite, spicy and yummy. It's made of rice cake and fish cake cooked in spicy sauce. You can get ddukkbokki from anywhere in Korea. It costs about 2$ per portion. It's very rare to see it cooked with meat. Don't buy the one with the meat in it because it might be pork.

2- Tuna Kimbab: (for the vegetarians who eat fish) Kimbab is made of seaweed, rice and some veggies inside. Originally it has a piece of ham inside the roll. What I do is I go to the kimbab shop and politely ask them to hold the ham and they kindly do it for me. Convenience stores sell pre-made kimbab, but don't buy these as they will probably include ham.

3- Bibimbab: Rice and vegetables topped with an egg. Some restaurants add beef to it. You can just ask them not to put any meat on in and they'll do it for you.

4- Kimchi: It is the most famous Korean food. Kimchi comes in different types and all are delicious. Kimchi is a side dish which goes well with pretty much everything. The most popular one, which is my favorite, is baechu-kimchi it's fermented cabbages with spices. So simple and so yummy. Kkakdugi radishes kimchi.

10- Jeon: Korean pancakes. God, I love them. There are different types of jeon, some made with meat, some made with seafood and some made with vegetables. Here's some of the vegetarian jeon:
a) Kimchijeon made with kimchi.
b) Pajeon made with green onions.
c) Gamjajeon made with potatoes.

Halal Korean meat dishes. (Not for Vegetarians)

1- Fish cake soup O deng gook: it's one of my favorite street food. A cup of soup and a piece of fish cake cost about 1,000KRW, less than a dollar. It's a perfect snack in winter.

2- Samgyetang: Chicken soup with ginseng served with a bowl of steamed rice. That dish has healing powers. I had a cold once and eating that dish made me feel much better. Believe me, you must eat this dish while you're in Korea.

3- Dalkgalbi: Stir-fried marinated chicken with sweet potatoes, onions, sliced cabbage and tteok. Heaven on a hot pan. When you go to the dalkgalbi restaurant the waiter will bring the pan filled with the ingredients and place it on the stove on your table. The waiter/waitress will give you a wooden spoon so you can stir-fry the dish. When the chicken is done, turn off the burner and eat it.

4- Galbi: Grilled beef short ribs. The ribs are marinated in a Korean sauce. They bring it to your table, you grill it and eat it. It's served with lettuce and side dishes.
